Biography

Cate's landscapes are influenced by Impressionism.  During high school and college, she studied with her father, nationally acclaimed still life painter Robert Douglas Hunter, and with Robert J. Cormier, both studens of R.H. Ives Gammell.   She earned a Master's degree in French Literature in 2006 from Boston University.  From 2007-2008, she studied academic drawing with Dana Levin, who received training from Daniel Graves at the Florence Academy.  She has broadened her study with workshops and critiques from Sam Vokey, David Curtis, Joseph McGurl, Stapleton Kearns and Don Demers.  Cate is a member of the Cambridge Art Association and the Cape Cod Art Association, where she was the 2009 artist-in-resident.

Her work has been exhibited nationally.  In 2010, she received the "Outstanding Work" award at the Marblehead Festival of the Arts.  One of her paintings is held in the permanent collection of the Cape Cod Museum of Art.  She works "en pleine air" or from life in the studio.

In the words of Marcel Proust: “the real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”
